A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
International terror listing and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.
Court proceedings and international connections
The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.
Regional context and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.
Prior legal cases and international reactions
A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
