Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then found multiple other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
