Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
